A Little Background

My name is Kiara Lee. I am a junior in college, studying Sociology and Spanish. I am an author, a speaker and an activist.

In May 2010, I wrote "Light-Skinned, Dark-Skinned and In-Between?" a children's book on colorism.

Colorism: discrimination, usually within an ethnic group, where one's value is based on the shade of one's complexion (light-skinned, dark-skinned, etc).

Since I've written the book, I've been speaking and doing seminars about colorism and self-esteem, as both subjects are closely related. In my travels, I've found that adults are even more so affected by colorism & self-esteem than children are. From this observation came my inspiration to create my very own amateur documentary, also called "Light-Skinned, Dark-Skinned or In-Between?". It examines the social and psychological affects of colorism on men, women, children and adults of all ages.

I've been showing the documentary as a part of my presentations and seminars, and people never seize to be amazed by how much so many people are affected by something as small as complexion.

Currently I am touring with various events around Richmond, VA and beyond in addition to working on new projects. Stay tuned to my website,
